How to Install Composite Cladding
Share
Different cladding products use a variety of installation systems, here at EnviroBuild we have chosen what we believe to be the quickest, easiest and securest way to install cladding. Our Hyperion Composite Cladding range utilises a ship-lap system and to make life even simpler we have created to short article explaining what you will need to consider.
Let’s start at the beginning and take you step by step through the process
Required Tools
- Standard woodworking tools can be used when working with Hyperion Cladding. If you are unsure on how to use any tool, please consult the manufacturer’s user manual.
- Circular Saw
- Power Mitre Saw can also be useful for efficiency and bevelled edges
- Jig Saw
- Hand Drill - 3mm and countersink drill bits
- Impact Driver (drill bit supplied in all Hyperion hidden fastening packs)
- Tape Measure
- Carpentry Square
- Spirit Level
- Safety Glasses and relevant Personal Protection Equipment
Calculating Material Requirement
To determine how much Hyperion Cladding material you will require, you can either use detailed plans or follow the method below. Please call our team for any assistance with this process on 0208 088 4888, we are happy to draw up a quote based off simple plans, architectural drawings or anything in-between.
- Start off by measuring your proposed cladding area(s)
- With your length and width measurements, you need to plan which direction to install your cladding; horizontally or vertically.
- If the boards are installed horizontally, then you need to divide the wall height by the visible width of the board (120mm). This will give you the number of boards high you will require.
- Now multiply the width of the wall by the number of boards high and then divide this number by the length of cladding board (3.6m). This will give you the total number of boards required.
- Always round UP the number of boards required at all stages
- If the wall width is less than our 3.6m board and you want no butt joints across the wall, simply order the calculated number of boards high
- If you have multiple Cladding areas, follow the steps for each step above and sum the quantities together for your order
- It is recommended that you add approx. 5% to the total for a scrap factor when calculating the amount of material required
You may also require fixing battens/joists, fascia boards, corner nosing trim and fixing screws. Below are our quantity recommendations:
- Battens / Joists – Require 9m per 5m² of Cladding
- Fascia Boards and Corner Nosing Trim – 2 per 5m² of Cladding
- Fixing screws – Require 5 per cladding board
These are best estimates only, for more complex designs and features a drawing to scale may help you determine how many cladding boards and accessories you will required.
Installing Cladding Supports
- Fix either treated timber or Manticore Plastic Lumber Battens to the supporting wall or structure with widths between battens no greater than 600mm
- The first batten should be installed min. 20mm from the floor
- Install battening for any wall edging, such as around doors and windows
- For vertical cladding, we recommend using cross battening to allow sufficient airflow. We also recommend using timber battens with a 15 degree top edge to shed water into the cavity
Installation Steps
Installing the first board
- Mark level lines on the battens for the first (lowest) board to be installed, ensuring the board will sit min. 15mm off the ground surface
- Pre-drill the screw holes in the cladding board 2mm wider than the thread of the screws used, to allow for material expansion. These holes should line up with the supporting battens
- Place the bottom cladding boards in position (or first board for vertical cladding)
- Fix to the batten through the pre-drilled holes, be careful not to over drive the screws
Once secure, place the next cladding board in place and repeat this process, checking the level before each board is fixed. Fix all boards until the top (or side for vertical) edge of the wall, you may be required to shape boards around doors and windows.
Finishing Steps
Install a Hyperion Fascia Board to finish off and cover the last cladding board fixing groove
If required, you can use Hyperion Fascia Board to cover cladding board expansion gap and you can
Install Hyperion Corner Nosing Trim to cover corners/edges, this also works for windows and corners as required
Both of these products can be cut to size and require pre-drilling and screwing down to battens.
